The project reimagines performance space in the heart of Brooklyn, transforming an empty lot once occupied by railroad parts into a vibrant cultural hub. Drawing inspiration from Lina Bo Bardi and Edson Elito’s Teatro Oficina in São Paulo, the design challenges the conventional relationship between performer and audience, fostering a dynamic, immersive experience.
Embracing the spirit of spontaneity seen in street performances across the city, Teatro Público creates a permanent yet adaptable stage—blurring the boundaries between spectacle and everyday life. Its open, flexible design offers multiple vantage points, allowing the building itself to become part of the performance. Beyond its role as a theater, the space serves broader civic functions, reinforcing its identity as a true public forum for creativity, dialogue, and community engagement.

This project envisions a dynamic, ever-shifting architecture that moves through the streets of Manhattan, rethinking the static nature of urban infrastructure. Inspired by classical New York zoning setbacks and the logic of scaffolding, the design unfolds as a vertical assemblage of modular spaces—hoisted on gantry-like cranes that glide along avenues, adapting to the city’s pulse.
Rather than anchoring itself to a single location, this mobile structure serves as a network of interwoven public programs: a swimming pool suspended above the street, a library that hovers between high-rises, a theater unfolding at an intersection. Each module functions independently yet collectively contributes to an evolving urban ecosystem, offering new vantage points and ephemeral experiences.
As it moves, the structure integrates with the existing fabric of Manhattan, activating underutilized spaces and reconfiguring itself based on public needs. This kinetic architecture blurs the line between permanence and temporality, questioning how cities might embrace adaptability, flexibility, and movement as foundational elements of urban life.
