Nestled within the rugged terrain of an abandoned marble quarry, the Ecology Centre and Herbarium embody the architectural philosophy of Bijoy Jain, developed through a deep analysis of his work. The design fosters a symbiotic relationship with air, water, and light, seamlessly integrating built and natural elements.
Air circulates through carefully articulated openings, creating a breathing structure in dialogue with its environment. Water follows the quarry’s natural contours, weaving through the site and enhancing its dynamic interplay. Diffused light filters through strategic fenestrations, casting subtle shadows that shift with time. This architectural ode to decay and renewal transforms the quarry into a layered landscape—an ecological center where history, sustainability, and the delicate choreography of materiality converge in a quiet yet powerful expression of place.
